Overcoming Common Challenges in Sexual Assault Investigations

This training provides an overview of the neurobiology of trauma, consent, and overcoming the challenges of delayed reporting, inconsistent statements, and lack of force in a sexual assault investigations. Participants will learn to approach an investigation in a trauma-informed manner, assisting in building rapport with survivors, while aiding the outcome of an investigation. Interviewing techniques model the use of Forensic Experiential Trauma Interviewing (FETI).

This training is ideal for law enforcement and/or campus security or those involved in the complaint resolution process in Higher Education Institutions.

This training can count towards continuing education for Confidential Advisors as well as complain resolution staff under the Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act. 

About the Presenter:

Sarah Layden is the Director of Programs and Public Policy with Rape Victim Advocates (RVA). Sarah is a sought after trainer, who has personally facilitated and ensured the training of nearly 8,700 law enforcement officers and prosecutors on issues related to working with sexual assault and abuse survivors. Sarah co-chairs the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault Public Affairs Committee and is an active member of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Sexual Assault Advisory Group, as well as the Attorney Generals Task Force on Improving the Investigation and Prosecution of Sex Crimes.

Sarah has completed 40-hour Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) training for adults and pediatrics, 40-hour domestic violence training, and advanced training on victim advocacy, stalking, sexual assault, and domestic violence. She is committed to ensuring survivors have a voice within the institutions they choose to access for support and justice.
